John Moran
John Moran has been playing bass since the 1960s, beginning his musical career in London before continuing in Australia with The Session Men, numerous other bands and a range of his own projects.
His work has always stretched well beyond conventional performance. Alongside his career as a bass player, John has explored the experimental worlds of sound, recording and sculpture, creating music that often sits outside traditional genre boundaries.
Up until 2013, John produced ten albums under another name, with his recordings attracting a modest but dedicated following both in Australia and overseas. His first album, Nightshade, received strong support from cult experimental band The Legendary Pink Dots, who praised his music for its psychedelic spirit, intelligence and emotional range.
John’s later work, including TrainRide, continued this experimental approach, combining instrumental music with spoken word and distinctly Australian storytelling. Reviewer Toby Davidson described the project as an intriguing and unconventional portrait of small-town life, encouraging audiences to experience the work live.
John continues to record, experiment and perform, always looking beyond the expected and exploring new possibilities in sound.
