Paul McCarthy is a Sydney-born artist (b. 1966) whose vivid, plein air interpretations of the Australian landscape are alive with expressive colour and energy. Over the past 25 years, Paul has developed a distinctive style that merges the bold intensity of Fauvism, the light sensitivity of Impressionism, and the fluid forms of contemporary abstraction. His unique palette choices bring an exotic vibrancy to his work, allowing him to depict the landscape in a fresh and dramatic light that is deeply connected to his surroundings.
He has exhibited extensively across Australia and internationally, including a collaborative exhibition in New York’s Soho district in 2001. Paul’s career has also encompassed significant community engagement—working with remote Aboriginal communities, secondary schools, and serving as acting curator at the Sydney Children’s Hospital. He is currently represented by Rochfort Gallery in Sydney.
Beyond his own practice, Paul has coordinated volunteer art projects with organisations such as the Sydney Children’s Hospital, the Sydney Cancer Centre at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and Studio Artes Hornsby, which supports adults living with disabilities.
“I’m drawn to colour—it’s always at the heart of my work,” Paul explains. “Painting outdoors allows me to respond directly to the changing light, mood, and movement of the Australian environment—from the coast to the outback. Whether the tones are bold or soft, I let the landscape guide me.”
A sought-after, award-winning tutor, Paul is known for his lively teaching style and his ability to inspire students to explore their individuality while building strong foundations in design, colour, and composition.
